Biography

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1961. He graduated from the University of Tokyo (PhD in System Science). After working as a chief researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies and the Center for Global Environmental Research, he became a professor at the Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management. He is also a member of the Science Council of Japan (environment), a visiting researcher at the International Research Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Vienna), the Institute of Statistical Mathematics and the University of Tokyo, a visiting professor at Hokkaido University, Sophia University and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

 

He is also actively coordinating international project as the Head of Global Carbon Project which is one of core project of Future Earth Global Carbon Project (GCP) He is serving as Lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), especially in the next 6th report, he is in charge of decarbonization in the urban system, as well as Elsevier's “Applied Energy (sustainable energy)” and “Environmental Planning B (urban data analysis)” as editorial board.

 

Until now, he has mainly engaged in research on global environmental issues. In particular, in the last 10 years, from the perspective of applied system analysis, he has promoted various large-scale research projects for the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the field of land use-transport models, ecosystem service evaluation, and sustainable urban system design.His research over the past 30 years have been published in about 200 peer-reviewed papers. Especially in the last few years, he has published English books and textbooks (Springer, Elsevier) on urban resilience, climate change countermeasures (mitigation/adaptation), spatial big data analysis, and urban system design for smart cities.

 

His lab, Innovations for Co-creating Future Society Laboratory in Keio SDM aims to create a future society in which the "environment" and "health" create virtuous circle. We are working on research on sustainable society, urban resilience, decarbonization of cities and regions, utilization of big data and AI, etc.
